To analyse the positioning-technologies and to check their suitability for daily use should be the main objective of this paper. Advantages and disadvantages are contrasted, and the basic areas and criteria of application are discussed. Another important issue is the construction of a self-programmed application for a pocket-PC that ought to put the WLAN-positioning into effect. By this means, it is tried to get at the imitation of commercial positioning-tools and their usability in a specific WLAN-area. The first part of the paper deals theoretically with the positioning-technologies GPS, LBS and the special case of LBS, i.e. WLAN-positioning. In doing so, it is especially paid attention to the overall explanation of the technology and to the indication of difficulties at the rotational position sensing. The second part explains the practical part of the paper. The programmed application is dealt with, and the preparations, the methods in use as well as the separate worksteps are explained. In the first instance, it is referred to problems that are occurring, and approaches to their solutions are explained. Moreover, the constructed application for a pocket-PC and its feasibilities are presented, without going too much into detail as far as the source code is concerned.
