Dokumentarfilme prägen gesellschaftliche Diskurse. Dementsprechend wichtig sind diese für aktivistische Bewegungen wie den Feminismus. Feministische Dokumentarfilme setzen sich mit verschiedenen Formen der Unterdrückung (Sexismus, Rassismus, Ableismus, Queerphobia etc.) und deren Aufhebung auseinander. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit feministischen Dokumentarfilmen und untersucht deren Entstehungs- und Produktionsbedingungen sowie Ziele, die Regisseur*innen mit feministischen Dokumentarfilmen verfolgen. Dafür werden die Dokumentarfilmgeschichte und -theorien sowie feministische Filmtheorien beleuchtet, sowie die Arbeitsbedingungen in der Filmbranche skizziert. Hier wird auf den Gender Bias und einige Maßnahmen zur Stärkung von Frauen* eingegangen. Um zu verdeutlichen, was in dieser Arbeit unter einem feministischen Dokumentarfilm verstanden wird, werden einige Beispiele angeführt. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen über die Entstehung, Produktion und Ziele von feministischen Dokumentarfilmen werden in dieser Arbeit fünf teilstrukturierte leitfadengestützte Expert*inneninterviews mit Regisseur*innen aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum durchgeführt und mit der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Gesellschaftliche und brancheninterne Diskurse beeinflussen die Entstehung feministischer Dokumentarfilme. Gefördert wird die Entstehung durch die bestehende Relevanz von feministischen Themen in den Medien, die #MeToo Debatte und eine feministische Haltung von Regisseur*innen. Die prekären Arbeitsbedingungen in der Filmbranche und unzureichende Entlohnung hindern die Arbeit der Filmemacher*innen. Diversität sowohl vor als auch hinter der Kamera ist bei feministischen Dokumentarfilmen essenziell, wird aber nur teilweise forciert. Das Aufbrechen bestehender Methoden ist eine feministische Tradition, die sich auch in der Darstellung von feministischen Dokumentarfilmen zeigt. Zudem formen flache Hierarchien und Augenhöhe die Arbeitsatmosphäre. Die Regisseur*innen verfolgen mit den Dokumentarfilmen vordergründig persönliche und politische Ziele und möchten möglichst viele Personen erreichen.

Documentaries shape public dialogue. Therefore, they are important for activist movements, such as feminism. Feminist documentaries cover different forms of oppression (e.g., sexism, racism, ableism, queerphobia etc.) and advocate for their abolishment. The topic of this thesis is feminist documentaries and their production conditions, as well as the filmmakers’ goals. To reveal the factors that contribute to their production, the history of documentaries and documentary theories as well as feminist film theories are examined. The working conditions and gender bias in the film industry as well as measures to improve these are discussed. To understand what feminist documentaries are, various examples and their classification as feminist documentaries are discussed. To answer the research questions about the formation, production, and goals of feminist documentaries, five semi-structured interviews with directors from Austria and Germany were conducted, followed by a qualitative content analysis to evaluate the interviews. Consequently, it was found that the public and sectoral discourse and the importance of feminist topics in each affect the formation of feminist documentaries. Furthermore, the #MeToo debate and a feminist attitude of the filmmakers promoted the emergence of feminist documentaries. Meanwhile precarious working conditions and inadequate pay hinder the development. Additionally, diversity on and off screen is essential for feminist documentaries but is only partly enforced in the industry. The questioning of existing methods and practices is a feminist tradition that is also present in the depiction of people and visuals of feminist documentaries. Finally, flat hierarchies and eye level play a big role in the working climate on sets of feminist documentaries. The goals that filmmakers pursued with the documentaries were predominantly personal and political, with a desire to reach as many people as possible.
