Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit den Geschlechterrollen in japanischen Comics, auch Manga genannt. Diese Comics haben im deutschsprachigen Raum in den letzten Jahren zunehmend an Beliebtheit gewonnen und können daher als Sozialisationsinstanz betracht werden. Der erste Teil der Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über Manga, ihre Entwicklung und ihre Besonderheiten. Der Schwerpunkt liegt bei der Analyse von vier populären Manga anhand eines Kriterienkatalogs, der die Bereiche Rollenverteilung, Geschlechterdarstellung, Handlungsspielräume, Familie und Beziehungen sowie Kleidung und Aussehen umfasst.

The following thesis deals with the roles of gender and the way they are depicted in contemporary Japanese Comics, the so called manga. The popularity of these comics has increased a lot over the past few decades, not only in Japan, but also in Germany and Austria, and therefore they may be seen as an agent of socialisation. The first part of this work aims at establishing a general idea of manga comics, their history and characteristics. The thesis focuses on the analysis of four popular manga on the basis of a criteria check list. It contains these category groups: role allocation, presentation of gender, room for manoeuvre as well as clothing and looks.
